El candidato de la derecha, José Raúl Mulino, sustituto del expresidente Ricardo Martinelli en los comicios panameños, fue elegido presidente este domingo 5 de mayo con una amplia victoria. Mulino, nombrado ministro en varias ocasiones, era favorito de las encuestas.
José Raúl Mulino no entró a la carrera presidencial sino hasta febrero de 2024. Lo hizo para remplazar in extremis a Ricardo Martinelli, el popular ex presidente de derecha, quien sigue asilado en la embajada de Nicaragua condenado por blanqueo de dinero y fue inhabilitado en marzo. “¡Misión cumplida Ricardo!”, declaró el presidente electo tras su triunfo.

“Se acabó la persecución política. Se acabó la manipulación del Ministerio Público. Se acabó la manipulación de jueces y magistrados. Se acabó esa vaina”, dijo Mulino en su discurso respecto los numerosos procesos judiciales abiertos contra Martinelli.
“Sin duda actuará como consejero informal del presidente”, afirma a RFI Kevin Partenay, experto en America Central y profesor en la Universidad de Tours.
Mulino obtuvo un 34% de los votos frente al 25% del centroderechista Ricardo Lombana, el candidato independiente frente la clase política tradicional de Panamá.
El nuevo jefe de Estado asumirá sus funciones el 1° de julio, pero no dispondrá de mayoría en una Asamblea Nacional muy dividida. Los resultados de las legislativas celebradas ese mismo domingo fueron mucho más dispares, con un aumento de los independientes en particular.
