El músico estadounidense James Kottak, exbaterista de la banda Scorpions, falleció el 9 de enero de 2024 a los 61 años de edad, noticia que dio a conocer su hija Tobi Tyler en las redes sociales sin revelar mayores detalles del suceso.
Aunque aún no se ha confirmado la causa de la muerte, diversos medios de comunicación internacional reportaron que lo encontraron sin vida en el baño de su casa en Louisville, Kentucky, Estados Unidos.

James Kottak no formó parte de la agrupación desde su creación, pero se convirtió en el integrante que logró la permanencia más larga, puesto que acompañó a la banda durante 20 años, desde 1996 hasta 2016, cuando lo expulsaron debido a sus problemas con el consumo excesivo de alcohol.
Años después, en 2022, Kottak habló públicamente de la difícil batalla que enfrentó para superar sus adicciones, y reconoció que en ese momento aún no había controlado por completo su alcoholismo.
Antes de ser miembro de Scorpions, James se destacó al pertenecer a la banda de hard rock Kingdom Come, conocida por sus marcadas influencias por la música de Led Zeppelin, que prosperó durante la década de los ochenta.
Cabe destacar, que el estadounidense también fue baterista de nueve agrupaciones más, como Nut House, Mister Charlie, Buster Brown, Montrose, Wild Horses, McAuley Schenker Group, Warrant y Ashba.
